Day 4 - Charleston, SC

Day 4 – We made breakfast and then headed out for Charleston, South Carolina.  We got there around noon and parked in a parking garage that was tall enough for RVs next to the Visitor’s Center.  Maddie had done the planning for Charleston, so we walked down to the Confederate museum.  The sky was looking pretty threatening, but we headed over to our carriage ride as planned.  It started pouring just before we got on.  We went on the tour, but those of us sitting on the outsides of the carriage got soaked.  It was still a nice tour.  When we got back to the downtown market area, we were stunned to find some of the streets flooded.  It turns out this happens fairly often around the open market area.  We walked around inside the market waiting for the rain to die down. It didn’t.  We made reservations for dinner at a nearby (two blocks away) restaurant, bought umbrellas, and headed out for the short walk. We ended up walking about 6 blocks to get around the ankle deep rivers that were running throughout the area.  We eventually made it to Cru Café, which was fantastic, and had a great meal (in our damp clothes and wet shoes).  The rain eventually died down and we walked the mile back to the motorhome.

It was supposed to be a 12 minute drive to our campground on James Island, but it ended up taking about an hour as we first waited in traffic for ½ an hour and then drove around on a bunch of small side-streets trying to find away around the closed off streets that were flooded.  We eventually found our way to and over the bridge out of town and ended up at James Island County Park.  It is a beautiful park – Patty and I walked around quickly as it was getting dark, but we won’t have much time to enjoy it as we are off tomorrow to visit Duke University and will have to get an early start.

This is the first place we’ve had wi-fi, but it really isn’t adequate (haven’t been able to upload a photo successfully yet), but I can do email.
