Second day in London
Today's entry was written by Jessie
We woke up in the morning and got dressed. We
went to the same French breakfast place as the previous day. Unfortunately,
Kelli still wasn’t well enough to join us. Then, we took a taxi to Buckingham
Palace. We didn’t do a tour of it, but that didn’t stop us from getting
something from the gift shop! After that, we walked through a nice little park
up to the Churchill war rooms. It was very interesting, and I was amazed by how
so much was preserved in these rooms. We got to see the different rooms they
worked in, and what they did inside. The second part of the tour was a Winston
Churchill Museum section. It had many modern electronic displays of different
times of his life. They had a big electronic timeline of the most important
events during his life, but then also had small artifacts such as guns or his
clothing. One thing that surprised me most learning about Churchill was how
long he lived. He lived until he was 90! This was very surprising to me because
I learned that one of his favorite hobbies was to eat and drink alcohol. The most interesting part of the exhibit to
me was in the Churchill museum. There was an electronic display that had
different quotes from different time periods in his life. It was interesting to
look at because it made me feel like I got a taste of what he was like, and
what his attitude was based on the different times in his life.
After the tour, we walked around town a bit in
search of a lunch restaurant. We ended up going to this nice Italian place
called Prezzo. We were all very hungry at this point and we ended up ordering a
dish each and a large pizza to share, too much food for just four people.
Although I can proudly say that I finished my entire bowl of pasta. After
lunch, we first stopped by a coffee shop, as we were all very tired and my
parents needed a little pick-me-up. Then we got in a taxi, and went back to our
apartment. Kelli had called us and happily told us she was feeling better and
was ready to come finally see some of London!
After picking Kelli up, we headed to North Gower
Street, and went to the door that was the spot where Sherlock Holmes was
filmed! Kelli was very excited to get to see that, and after looking around a
while, we headed over to the Tower of London. We only had a short amount of
time to tour around it before it closed, but we managed to make it to the crown
jewels, and to the White Tower that had the armor of previous kings. When we got out, we walked around in search
of a dinner place. We went to a market that was in the town, and ended up going
to a restaurant called Cacao. Most of there dishes had some side our sauce that
incorporated the cacao bean. It was a pretty nice restaurant, and we generally
enjoyed our various dishes.
After our dinner, we headed off to London Eye, a
big, slow-moving ferris wheel that had a beautiful view of the whole city. I
think everyone was pretty tired from the whole day so it was nice to be able to
sit down and to just enjoy.
We took a taxi home and after playing a couple
games of Heads Up! (charades) and Taboo, we went to bed.
